Dr Vincent Adams,
As noted in the press Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Ltd
continues to flare more than 15 million cubic feet per day. It had
already flared more than 9 billion cubic feet of gas.
The flaring is a breach of what we were promised. In 2017, the
Minister of Natural Resources said, “We also determined that under no
circumstances… there will be flaring of the gas”. The flaring goes
against the Guyana’s government’s green commitment!
It has been about 6 months since Liza Phase 1 started producing oil.
Are we still in the start-up period?
The environmental permit to Esso clearly prohibits routine flaring and
requires Esso to re-inject the associated gas at its cost.
What measures did Guyana take to verify the actual cubic feet flared to date?
Can you give us an update on the progress to stop this flaring?
