Further to the various public pronouncements about the gas to energy (GtE) pursuant to the Environment Permit (EP) granted to EEPGL, on behalf of the Stabroek Block Partners, and also pursuant to the publications on the gas to power published by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s website inter alia, I decided to do a follow up site visit to the civil works permitted and conducted by the pre-EP in Q1/Q2 2022.
On Saturday 4, March, 2023 while I was on the public road, in the permitted civic works area where the landing site is for workers being transported to this location, via the Demerara River, I was accosted by 3 men who had on white hard hats. They claimed I had no right to be there. They acted in an intimidating manner. Fearing for my safety, I was able to escape with my photographs intact.
At no point, not on ExxonMobil’s corporate website, where the Community Grievance Mechanism is published, nor by any Government Ministry or Agency publication, is notice given of the closure of the location to the public. Complaint was made via the website of the name of the company seen on the aforementioned men’s hats. Please see email below. The email sent bounced back.
A report was entered unto the books at the nearest police station to the aforementioned location. It is my hope that this is not a step into Guyana’s gas version of the flow into a common end point of activist in Latin America, most notably Brazil and Colombia.
